OUR COMMUNITY
Ramnicu Valcea is the capital city of Valcea county located in the center region of Romania. Situated in the foothills of the Carpathian mountains, Ramnicu Valcea, or often referred to as simply Valcea, has a population of close to 120,000 people.  Valcea has been known for its large chemical plant, which used to employ over half of the city’s residents.  Parts of the factory have closed leaving many people without work, but this situation in Valcea is not unique.  With steady employment becoming harder and harder to find, many Romanians look outside the country borders for work.  Also, the residual effects of 50 years of communism, and the continuing corruption have left scars on the minds and hearts of the Romanian people and Valcea is no exception.  A general sense of hopelessness shadows the country and unfortunately the children and youth are witness to this. According to the latest country report on Romania by the European Commission, “child poverty is high and rising all the time.” Many families find themselves in a cycle of poverty which becomes harder and harder to escape.

OUR WORK

Our team in Ramnicu Valcea works through a number of projects that are meant to improve the level of education and to build a sense of community, which is lacking due to the communist years.

- We support the work of the local church while following steps to plant a new congregation, where everyone can feel God’s grace and love.

- As an outreach into our community, we also work with Roma people to bring Christ in the lives of the Roma children through Sunday School classes.

- We work on building and strengthening the relationships with High School students through our various activities.  Some of these include ESL programs, crafts clubs, and Bible studies.

- We lead VBS programs for Roma children and for children at risk.

- We lead or help with different events throughout the year: putting together and distributing Christmas gifts in the local hospital, local church, and nursing homes; Mother’s Day craft activities in schools and local church, etc.

- We are also committed to building relationships with teachers and other local professionals that have an interest in giving back to our community.
