OUR COMMUNITY

The Eastern Cape is one of the poorest provinces in South Africa - with nearly 60% of the population classified as poor and 12% as having multidimensional poverty. This leads to a large proportion of people unable to afford secure accommodation, instead living in shacks from corrugated iron sheets - resulting in severely compromised security and health. This is combined with high unemployment, high prevalence of alcohol & substance abuse, domestic abuse & broken families, violent crime and a general lack of access to food, freedom and forgiveness.

OUR WORK

We work with township communities in the East London area of Eastern Cape to bring positive change through various programs designed to improve the level of education, livelihood opportunities, and overall health and competency of the community.

We do this by working with local partners in each specific community to assess local needs and related strengths in the areas of food, freedom and forgiveness, and then working with them to design or enhance existing programmes to achieve substantive and measurable impact in integrated community transformation.

Examples include programmes such as:

Early Childhood Development Centres

Established to provide a place for the most vulnerable children in the community - where mothers can leave their children during the day while they go off to work; where the children can find love and attention from the teacher who serves them daily and receive a well-balanced, nutritious meal ensuring their physical development is progressing satisfactorily; and where the children are exposed to the world of academics to stimulate their minds and help prepare them for their transition to primary school.

An Enterprise Development Programme.

Through working with unemployed Youth & adults to launch their own businesses or to become more employable by acquiring the necessary knowledge and training. This includes elements of life skills and entrepreneurial training & Mentorship - and is run through local partner churches & organizations as well as through a citywide plastics recycling enterprise which offers livelihood & business creation opportunities around this industry while mobilizing communities to positively impact the environment.

Discipleship Training.

Working with key leaders to develop local champions that will take the message of Jesus Christ and His life-changing Gospel to the entire community & beyond.
